Absentee Ballots - Hoax?

I just received an email from a business associate regarding absentee ballots.  In the body of her email she wrote: “Hi Guys, I was sent through the U.S. mail an Absentee Ballot to my Mother’s address.  I have never lived at that address.  Something is up!  Beware!   Sincerely, XXXXX XXXXXX.”  (X = I blocked out her name).

Then I noticed that the original email was forwarded 7 other times.  The original message was:

According to Progressive Talk Radio,

The McCain campaign is sending absentee ballot applications to registered democrats
or people that have donated to Obama’s campaign. These ballots are deliberately
misleading and have postage paid return addresses that are for an election clerk that is
outside of your city or town. What this will end up doing is either having your vote not
counted, or if you return one of these, they can get you for election fraud, citing
ineligibility for absentee voting. These ballots are only being sent out in ‘purple states’
and this is a big deal.

This is called voter caging, and is a huge problem.

The McCain campaign is trying to steal this election much the same as Bush stole the
election via his Fla. connections.

Get this information out to everybody you can, and tell anyone you know who has
received one of these ballots that they need to contact their city election clerk or the
supervisor of elections immediately.  Also call the local media and let them know what
is going on.

The main stream media is never going to cover this so we have to depend on our ground
campaign to get the word out to our voters.

I also noticed that there was no subject in the subject line and there was no signature at the bottom.

I am mentioning this for several reasons.  The Internet is a very powerful tool and used the right way can be of immense value to everyone.  However, as in all things there are corrupt people who will do whatever they can to lie, deceive and cheat others in order to accomplish their goals.

Word of mouth advertising is the most powerful form of advertising and the most effective.  When a friend tells you something, you tend to believe her/him.  The problem comes when he/she gets their information from someone who gets their information from someone, etc.

Well, it’s sort of like that game we used to play where you form a circle and the first person whispers something to the person next to her/him and they in turn repeat the same statement to the next person and so on.  Each person is supposed to repeat the exact same message.  However, when the message goes full circle, the resulting message is completely different from the original.

I am sure you remember the movie about “Is there a Santa Claus?”  When it ends up that there is a headline in the New York Times stating, “Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus”, the judge rules that Santa Claus does in fact exist because if it was in the New York Times, it must be true.  The reality is that we need to be very cautious about what we read and what we hear because people are not always honest in what they say and do.

With that in mind, we must also be careful about going too far in the opposite direction.  We still need to look for and see the good in people and to trust them.  Just exercise a cautious trust when you are unsure of the origin of a statement.

Back to my email message.  I don’t know if the Republicans or the Democrats are trying to manipulate our voting system or if some third entity is trying to do so.  Always be diligent in how you react to what you hear or read.  If it is important to you, then do some research on your own as I did with the above email message.  Especially, never forward a message of importance unless you strongly feel it is accurate based on your research.

Finally, I could start a rumor that Gary Gile is running for President as an independent and to have everyone vote for him as a “write-in candidate” on the ballot.  Then through the power of word of mouth advertising and viral marketing that message could reach and motivate enough of the voters to ensure his election.  In the viral message it could be pointed out that if we want to return the USA to its glory, we need a fresh face in the White House, a face that can not be bought by special interest groups and a person who demands the government return to its original purpose.  When written in a very persuasive manner it just could work.  Note: this is just an example.  Do not take it serious.

Even with that disclaimer, if this article was to be passed around to enough people, I am sure I would receive more than 10% of the votes cast.  The good news, I think, is that even if I got 55% of the votes I would not be President because it is not the voters that decide who is President, rather the Electoral College that decides.  Hmm.  Perhaps we need to do something about that.
